Each design decision is underpinned by practical considerations, such as occupiable roof space, passive solar shading - thanks to the colonnade – and a fabric-first approach, informed by Passivhaus principles of compact form, high-performance insulation, high-performance glazing, controlled ventilation and efficient use of energy.&nbsp; Internally, the emphasis is on allowing the home to adapt as patterns of occupation change, ensuring long-term occupation. The project forms one half of an intergenerational redevelopment of West Farm, alongside new-build The Linhay. The two homes are separate but related, creating space for three generations to live close by, balancing shared support and proximity with two self-contained households. young family in the rural, Somerset landscape around Babcary, The Linhay is inspired by the historic linhay barn, a distinctive South-West agricultural typology. &nbsp;The project reinterprets the spatial logic, proportions and rhythm of the typical colonnaded barn to create a contemporary home that sits between domestic comfort and agricultural utility, rooted in place, without resorting to pastiche. &nbsp; The architecture treats landscape, habitat and home as interconnected rather than separate systems, delivering a multi-generational ‘campus’ that encompasses Highlands, outbuildings and surrounding fields.&nbsp; As part of the strategy of habitat creation and restoration, The Linhay is designed for co-habitation (/ to be shared with) local wildlife, as much a home for them as for the Gillespies.&nbsp; An intensive green roof gives the impression that a section of field has been lifted to form an inhabited space below.&nbsp; This extends through to the front of the building where the two-storey form cuts away at first floor, providing shelter, roosting and nesting space for local birdlife. The material palette balances agricultural robustness with domestic precision: durable enough for a farmstead setting, yet detailed enough to give the building a clear contemporary identity. Whilst the envelope reads as a typical domestic form, the entire south elevation is recessed to create the characteristic colonnade. This provides solar relief and shading to the Linhay’s internal spaces during the summer months and takes advantage of the low-tracking sun in the winter months for solar gain. All-electric, with air source heat pump, mechanical ventilation, heat recovery and a photovoltaic array, The Linhay transforms a regional agricultural archetype into a low-energy family home. As Bearsden developed into a highly desirable industrial age suburb it gave rise to a diverse and eclectic array of architectural styles and forms. Each villa on Thorn Road represents the fashion and architectural tastes of the developer, architect and builder of the time. The layout of this residential property reflects the era of its construction, with large formal entertaining spaces dominating the layout, with smaller cellular servants quarters occupying the rear of the property. As a result this large home suffers from poorly lit and sized kitchen accommodation and inadequate guest facilities. The proposals sought to maintain the quality of the existing living accommodation whilst creating a large kitchen, dining space to the rear, south facing aspect of the property. A fully operable south facing glazed elevation invites natural light into the internal environment whilst better address the currently underutilised external environment. A palette of warm and tonally muted materials constitute the internal decoration with an injection of colour and texture introduced by the red and beige sandstone walling. The proposals seek to bed the scheme within the landscape by utilising the sites existing topography, the existing fringe vegetation as well as the introduction of a carefully curated design response to enhanced biodiversity and ecology. The built form and landscaping strategy go handin hand in order to create a scheme that is treads lightly and is of its place. The house itself is conceived as two distinct blocks, arranged in relation to views, passive solar design and the prevailing weather whilst permitting visual and physical connections with the verdant immediate and wider context.A ground floor of local stone provides human scale as well as enclosure, creating a consistent datum across the site. On top of this solid mass perches a zinc or timber clad element taking reference from the forms and materiality of both traditional and modern barns in the area. A juxtaposition and hierarchy is formed between the ground floor environment and an ancillary family member. The minimal contemporary detailing free of ornament, the tone and agricultural form of the proposed mass is intended to reinforce this concept. approach to the hierarchy of domestic and agricultural building forms, as well utilising built form to act as a binding agent to the currently disparate external spaces. The proposed form draws upon the evident existing agricultural building fabric as well as the typology of the Linhay barn, a feature historically common to the south west farming landscape. The historic outbuildings on the site bounded a central courtyard and it is likely the arrangement would have comprised elements common in the Linhay, with the open fronted barns facing a central operational farmyard. The new build elements are represented as a collection of agricultrual outbuildings, forming a newly created south facing courtyard as well as walled garden to the north. The materiality draws upon the suite of materials on site - brick, knapped and field flint as well as clay tile - to give a robust quality. The existing dwelling is finished in plastered external walls and a thatched roof and is instantly recognisable as a domestic residential building. A juxtaposition is therefore formed between this primary element and its ancillary family member. The minimal contemporary detailing free of ornament, the tone and agricultural form of the proposed form intended to reinforce this concept.
