A key element of the project brief was to facilitate a more generous internal
living environment whilst remaining sympathetic to the original character
of the dwelling. A two storey extension will occupy a redundant and south
facing part of the sites garden, an aspect with no neighbouring properties.
This move allows for a triple aspect convivial living space, with a southerly
and northerly aspect engaging views and an easterly aspect opening up
onto a peaceful garden space.

The character and organisation of the existing house is introvert in nature, with cellular rooms failing to respond to the sites unique aspect. Opportunities to take
advantage of passive solar gains, immediate garden context and the wider views are missed.

The extension is intended to be contextual in its form and scale but a stark
contrast in its approach to materiality. Appearing as a subservient element
to the existing dwelling, the language of material sets it apart as a modern
and complimentary addition.
