Dafforne Road

London - Residential - Complete

The 19th century saw the development of the new urban Balham. The exemplary residential development of this urban centre was the Heaver Estate, located adjacent to Tooting Bec Common. The estate was built on the site of Elms Farm to which Dafforne Road enjoyed uninterrupted access to. As the new urban centres grew, the street was marooned within the characteristic urban grain of Victorian terrace housing.
Houses that once enjoyed large open gardens with expansive views were annexed and often the relationship with external space lost.

The proposals at Dafforne Road sought to reconfigure the internal spaces and extend the property at the ground floor in order to facilitate a layout that removed the layers between interior and exterior environments. Internal partitioning of spaces was removed and the facilities reconfigured in order to create a convivial living area, with large areas of glazing affording direct access to the cultured garden space. A careful balance was struck between the introduction of natural light and privacy to neighbouring properties. Internally the palette consists of pale timbers, soft whites and bold accents.

Externally the extensions the material choice celebrated the use of brick in both its arrangement and colour choice, with London stock brick married with terracotta, a play on the typical flat segmental arches synonymous with the local housing stock.
