The form, workmanship and material of the existing carport on the site is of good quality, therefore the design concept can be considered as a light touch approach to preserving this character, whilst taking the opportunity to introduce a series of appropriate contemporary interventions.

Whilst the form is instantly recognisable and draws both domestic and agricultural connotations, the open fronted carport makes the use apparent and faces on to the highway and primary elevation. As such there is the opportunity to introduce a contemporary, crisply detailed and materially contextual addition to this elevation. Privacy to the internal spaces was as important as introducing natural light, as such a composition of reeded vertical timber is introduced, allowing diffused views to the spaces beyond.
