Highlands is a re-thinking of the traditional farmhouse vernacular.  The form – both sculptural and restrained - takes cues from local agricultural buildings: a strong rectilinear base, striking triangular pediment, red metal roof and the dramatic façade colonnade are all inspired by the traditional cowshed and barn forms that pepper the landscape.

Each design decision is underpinned by practical considerations, such as occupiable roof space, passive solar shading - thanks to the colonnade – and a fabric-first approach, informed by Passivhaus principles of compact form, high-performance insulation, high-performance glazing, controlled ventilation and efficient use of energy.  Internally, the emphasis is on allowing the home to adapt as patterns of occupation change, ensuring long-term occupation.

The project forms one half of an intergenerational redevelopment of West Farm, alongside new-build The Linhay. The two homes are separate but related, creating space for three generations to live close by, balancing shared support and proximity with two self-contained households.
