The extension, reconfiguration and refurbishment of a Grade II listed cottage in Berkshire. The designs sensitively and carefully look to restore the cottage and undo years of negligent cosmetic additions, in the meantime the existing modern two storey extension is to be hollistically refurbished and extended providing additional core living space.
The mass is extended to the south, better engaging with the mature garden whilst
avoiding detrimental impact upon the character of the original cottage. Due to the sites steep
topography, the inhabitants of the kitchen /dining area will have an eye level view of the
planting. At first floor, a single floor to ceiling window and juliet balcony create a high degree of permeability with the mature garden.
The current dormer window is small and incongruous in scale to the form of the existing
structure. The detailing is pastiche in nature, to a non-contextual domestic design. The replacement structure is proposed with a form contemporary in nature with minimal detailing. The scale is commensurate with the roof form, creating more usable space internally.
