The design concept can be characterised as an approach to the hierarchy
of domestic and agricultural building forms, as well utilising built form to
act as a binding agent to the currently disparate external spaces. The
proposed form draws upon the evident existing agricultural building fabric
as well as the typology of the Linhay barn, a feature historically common
to the south west farming landscape. The historic outbuildings on the site
bounded a central courtyard and it is likely the arrangement would have
comprised elements common in the Linhay, with the open fronted barns
facing a central operational farmyard.

The new build elements are represented as a collection of agricultrual
outbuildings, forming a newly created south facing courtyard as well
as walled garden to the north. The materiality draws upon the suite of
materials on site - brick, knapped and field flint as well as clay tile - to give
a robust quality. The existing dwelling is finished in plastered external walls
and a thatched roof and is instantly recognisable as a domestic residential
building. A juxtaposition is therefore formed between this primary element
and its ancillary family member. The minimal contemporary detailing free
of ornament, the tone and agricultural form of the proposed form intended
to reinforce this concept.
